Professor Robert Avrett (1901-1975) was a member of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Tennessee. He taught Spanish and Comparative Literature. He contributed to the professional journals in that field and from 1951 to 1956 was assistant editor of the Modern Language Journal. But he was also a poet, and critic, and book reviewer, whose writings have appeared in some eighty periodicals, here and abroad. Two volumes of his poems were published-The Dream Comes First (Boston, 1949), and Against the Dark (1961).
